Rare and unusual English made double barrel made by CALVERT in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. This very fine made double barrel is marked "CALVERT, COMMERCIAL ST., LEEDS" on top of barrel behind rear sight. The 28 inch barrels are rifled, and are stamped "14" on the underside of both barrels at the rear/chamber area that rests on the water table. Features a Jones underlever, with a blade front sight and four leaf express (fold-up) rear sights marked 100, 200 and 500 respectively. Barrel retains 90% of the Damascus pattern with a nice gray overall patina. Very fine English scroll engraving on the receiver, lock, hammers and underlever. This is a pin-fired hammer shotgun which may have had some conversion. Underside of each barrel beneath forearm is twice stamped "15" with proof marks. Mechanically excellent. Excellent example of an H.H. SCHULTE Percussion muzzle loading rifle in .36 Cal. Top of barrel marked "H H SCHULTE PITTSBURGH"., 35-1/2 inch barrel, overall 52 inches. Wood is excellent. H.H. Schulte was born in Germany in 1842 and came to America with his family in 1853. He learned the gunsmith trade in Pittsburgh. He served in the Army in 1864 and after the war returned to Pittsburgh and resumed his trade, working for William Craig, who he later bought out. SCHULTE made firearms from 1868 to the fall of 1879.
