Lot 9: Trio of shorebirds mounted on driftwood: Dowitcher (root head,) Yellowlegs and Sanderling by the father and son duo of Eldon & Roy Willis. c1960s
In the 1950s, Eldon [Willis] carved his first shorebirds - a stand of fat beach robins. Family members used these and other shorebird decoys to shoot a mess of birds for the table. In 1964, Elmer Salter, Eldon's carving partner died. Eldon and his son Roy started carving decoys together. Initially, Eldon chopped out the bodies and heads while Roy sanded and painted them. Therefore, Roy and Eldon jointly made many of the 1960s and 1970s decoys that came from the carving shed of Eldon. Roy carved in a style that is very similar to his father. However, late in the 1960s, Eldon started carving shorebird decoys for tourists. He carved lesser and greater yellowlegs (slight variation in size), Dowitchers (called greybacks), curlews, and red knots (beach robins). At this time, Roy painted and sanded the shorebird decoys with his father. After his father's death in 1981, Roy kept part of the inventory of shorebirds that his father made and he painted. Excerpt taken from Shorebird decoys of North Carolina by Kroghie Andreson.

He made brant, geese, black ducks, bluebills, canvasbacks, buffleheads, goldeneyes, red-breasted and hooded mergansers, and pintail decoys as well as some decorative carvings. He also made miniatures. His decoys were very inexpensive, serviceable and oversized. He made many of his decoys out of cottonwood. His biggest influence was Ira Hudson. They would work together. Lot 35: Canvasback pair by R Madison Mitchell; Havre de Grace, MD. Full size, hand carved, not turned. Mitchell is one of Maryland's most celebrated carvers
This pair of Canvasback was mounted on a set of lamps. "R. Madison Mitchell once said he just wanted to be a good funeral director and carve wood when things got slow. But it was the ducks and geese he fashioned in his spare time -- some of which fetched $10,000 -- that made him famous. Mr. Mitchell's decoys are showcased in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, but most of his work is immortalized in the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum. In the small house, tucked behind the family's funeral home business, were more ducks -- photos of them covering paneled walls, decoys lining shelves, stained-glass ducks, even a wind sock decorated with ducks. The man who would become the undisputed dean of decoy-carvers began carving as a hobby in 1924 when business was slow at the funeral home." --Excerpt taken from a January 15, 1993 Baltimore Sun article.
